Etching is a way of making images using metal plates and acid. The plate is covered with a soft varnish which is scratched through to make an image. The plate is then immersed in acid. The acid eats only that part of the metal uncovered by the scratching of the varnish. The plate is then prepared with ink and rolled through a press with paper.

The earliest dated etching (1513) is by the Swiss Urs Graf. Durer used the technique, and some of the high points of the history of etching are Rembrandt, Goya, and Picasso. Lucian Freud and David Hockney have produced bodies of notable etchings. Currently, as can be seen from the recent 'Print Matters' show at the Tate in London and Liverpool, and from the '05 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, numbers of artists are showing interest in a wide range of approaches to etching and other print media, experimental and traditional, abstract and representational.

Frederick Jones' etchings are predominantly monochrome, though red is an occasional addition to the colour range. Most of the images are urban and/or figurative. They are representational and aim to catch the texture of the everyday world - places, times, effects of light and weather -, but there is also a strong concern with underlying geometry.

Kathrine Schou is a Norwegian, born in Oslo, who has been living and working on the Wirral for last 6 years. Her mainly figurative images are inspired by nature, both plant- and animal-life. Her etchings engage with colour and often combine various techniques of etching and aquatint. The images explore a world in which fancy has room to breathe, and text quite often becomes an integral part of the image.
